Minimal Vessels, 3D artists, and designing chess pieces

I decided to start with a shape with a little visual interest knowing that this should print well and that I would be able to add some more visual interest later.

I copied the curved and raised them up 4cm
Using the loft and then create polysurface commands I then finished the basic shape.
To add some visual interest I decided to try using the twist command. This took a bit of getting used to.
I then decided I wanted to experiment with a tapered shape and created the shape below.
I also wanted to experiment with seeing what the tapered shape would look like twisted.
In the end I decided that I liked the look of the first twisted design the most and prepared it for 3D printing.

Chess pieces progress

I started by creating a base using the revolve command so that the base would have various curves and details.
Then using the polygon, loft and twist commands I made a pillar, I ensured that I did this on a separate layer so that I could copy the base later.
I then used lines and curves to create a cap that I could revolve and top with a sphere in order to finish off the basic shape of the pawn.
To make my pawn more unique I then modelled a simple helmet for it, as pawns are soldiers. This proved rather challenging as you cannot select the curves of a sphere.
I then made a small shield detail for the pawn as I thought it would give the piece more character without getting in the way once the piece was on a board.
I then copied the base over twice, once so that I could create the basic form for the bishop, knight, king, and queen pieces as they would all have similar structures and once more for the rook who would not have a similar structure. I did this so all the bases would be identical and all of the pieces would fit in the same space.

Once I had the base for the bishop I used the same polygon loft and twist method I used for the pawn to create the body.
Then much like with the pawn I used lines and curves to create a shape I then revolved and topped with a sphere to create the basic shape of the piece.
Once I had this basic shape I want to use to make the Bishop, King, Queen, and Knight I duplicated the layers and objects so I would have identical starting points for each piece.

It was at this point that I ran out of time before the next class, and as such I will have to finish the pieces as quickly as possible in the coming week.
